The Fate of Nosema locustae (Microsporida: Nosematidae) in Argentine Grasshoppers (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

چکیده
Surveys to detectNosema locustae, amicrosporidian pathogen of orthopterans introduced in Argentina several times from1978 to 1982 to control pest grasshoppers, were conducted during the 1994 and 1995 seasons at locations in Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces. A total of 7535 grasshoppers collected from 13 different siteswere examined. Infected grasshopperswere found at 4 of the sites, 2 of them 75 km from the closest introduction site. Infections were diagnosed in 10 species: 7Melanoplinae (Baeacris punctulatus, Dichroplus elongatus, D. pratensis, D. vittatus, Neopedies brunneri, Scotussa daguerrei, and S. lemniscata), 2 Gomphocerinae (Staurorhectus longicornis andRhammatocerus pictus), and 1Romaleidae (Diponthus argentinus). Prevalence of infection ranged from 0.7% in D. pratensis to 33.3% in R. pictus and averaged 7.9%. B. punctulatus appeared as the most susceptible species to infection.N. locustae is well established in grasshopper communities of centralArgentina. Some comments are included about concerns that were raised on the use of exotic agents for the control of nativepests. r 1996

Transfer of Nosema locustae (Microsporidia) to Antonospora locustae n. comb. based on molecular and ultrastructural data.
Nosema locustae is a microsporidian parasite of grasshopper pests that is used as a biological control agent, and is one of the emerging model systems for microsporidia. Due largely to its diplokaryotic nuclei, N. locustae has been classified in the genus Nosema, a large genus with members that infect a wide variety of insects. However, some molecular studies have cast doubt on the validity of ...

متن کاملA Novel Spore Wall Protein from Antonospora locustae (Microsporidia: Nosematidae) Contributes to Sporulation
Microsporidia are obligate intracellular parasites, existing in a wide variety of animal hosts. Here, we reported AlocSWP2, a novel protein identified from the spore wall of Antonospora locustae (formerly, Nosema locustae, and synonym, Paranosema locustae), containing four cysteines that are conserved among the homologues of several Microspodian pathogens in insects and mammals. AlocSWP2 was de...
